How does the Spanish Verb Machine Work?

First, let me start with a little review of how the Spanish verb system works. All Spanish verbs in their infinitive form end in -ar, -er or -ir. These infinitives are then conjugated to derive the various verb forms, depending on person, number and tense.
  • First person - This is the person who is speaking, in other words the first person is I or We. I is first person singular and We is first person plural.
  • Second person - This is the person who being spoken to. This would be You, in English or Tú, Usted, Vosotros or Ustedes in Spanish, depending on the number and level of familiarity.
  • Third person - The third person is anyone else, who is not talking and who is not being talked to. This can also be singular or plural. English - He, She, It, They. Spanish - El, Ella, Ellos, Ellas.
Now in English, the verbs do not change very much, based on the person and number. In the present tense regular verbs, the only verbal change is an -s that is added to the third person singular. For example the verb to play: (At the same time, let's examine the equivalent Spanish verb.

As you can see from the table above, in English, the verb to play only changes once, but the Spanish verb changes in all the persons and numbers. If you are here, reading this page, this is probably not new information to you. So let's get on with how this script works.

This Spanish Verb Machine is a program written in Php that takes a Spanish verb in its infinitive form and conjugates it into all the tenses. It works by checking the given verb against a list of verbal patterns, which are used to define irregular verbs. If the verb matches an irregular pattern, then the irregular conjugation is displayed. If the verb appears to be regular, a regular conjugation is displayed. The program is essentially simple, however, the definitions of irregular verbs is the most complex aspect of this program.
